A healthy tear film, spread across the eye by a blink, makes the
surface of the eye smooth and clear. Without an adequate tear
film, sharp vision is not possible.
Dry eye occurs when the eye does not produce enough tears, or
an adequate quality of tears, to keep the eye healthy and comfortable.
Symptoms
of Dry Eye
- Stinging or burning
- Scratchiness
- Stringy mucus in or around the eyes
- Excessive irritation from smoke or wind
- Excess tearing
- Momentary or persistent blurring of vision
Causes of Dry Eye
Age often decreases tear production, causing dry eyes, particularly
in post-menopausal women. Sjögren's syndrome, some eyelid
disorders, environmental factors and certain medications may also
cause dry eye.
Treatment
Artificial tears often provide relief by lubricating
the eyes and helping replace the natural moisture layer. These
are available without a prescription and can be used as often
as necessary.
Punctal plugs are inserted into the channel where tears
drain out of the eye and into the nose, conserving natural tears
and making artificial tears last longer. These are inserted in
the office by an ophthalmologist.
Restasis, a prescription drug, may help increase the
eyes' natural ability to produce tears.
